Malachi Kelly was born in 1859 in a thatched cottage in Drumbriffin,
County Galway, Ireland. The story is he flipped a coin to see if he was
going to the US or Australia. The US won. He arrived in Indiana in 1885.
According to his son Jim Kelly, he worked as a welder at first and
eventually became a saloon proprietor. Although he couldn't read he'd
have the newspaper read to him daily. He married Mary Ellen Haley in 1892
and became a citizen in 1896.
When prohibition became law in 1920, Malachi returned to Ireland with most
of his family. Patrick who was already married and Malachi stayed in
Indianapolis. He left property after his death in 1942, was divided. Son
James also returned to the states after living 5 years in Ireland.
It is said he owned 3 miles of the Galway Road and had to go to court to
give up some of the land for the road.
The family tavern was called Malachi Kelly, Mary Ellen Kelly and the
Central Tavern. After his death in 1943 it was managed by son Rodger and
later Joe Kyne (Delia's son) until it was sold in 2001. His grandchildren
still live on the property in Loughgeroge, Galway, Ireland.

in Ireland. Per Marge MacKanic.
